Quintessential Steps

David Rubinstein

for guitar

Composed in 2001.
3 minutes.

The word "quintessential" in the title derives from the Latin quinta essentia, meaning a fifth essence, or element, supposed by medieval philosophers to be more prevalent than the four elements of ancient philosophy - earth, air, fire, water. I like the use of this word because it refers to the 5/8 meter. In this piece, the four "elements" (or eighth notes) are replaced by two quarter notes and followed by an odd, or fifth, eighth note. The rhythmic tune, somewhat Latin - quarter, quarter, eighth - is developed as fully as possible while retaining its harmonically straightforward character. - D.R.
