Quartet Variations
David Rubinstein
Composed 1994-2005.
for flute/piccolo, violin, cello and piano
Duration: 9 minutes.
This is an interesting and exciting tonal work that will be a plus on any chamber music program. Originally for flute and orchestra, the piece now features equal interplay between four instruments, five if you count piccolo. In other words this is more of a quartet than a concerto for flute and three instruments.
Quartet Variations begins with a flute solo consisting of a simple C-major dominant seventh "theme" reminiscent of harmonic overtones. New harmonies are introduced, then follows a series of variations on the different segments of the theme. The intervals heard in the opening are transformed rhythmically. The piece concludes with a vivace based on the whole-tone scale used in the theme.
