Cappuccino Concertino

David Rubinstein

vocal trio (soprano, tenor, baritone), string quartet, flute/piccolo, bassoon, harpsichord
Alternate version: vocal trio (soprano, tenor, baritone) and harpsichord or piano

Composed in 2001.
19-20 minutes.

If you are looking for a humorous and audience-friendly piece to fit into a baroque program, look no further. A "Coffee Cantata" spoof (actually it's not a "spoof" of the Bach work but rather a more contemporized version), the libretto of Cappuccino Concertino (composed in 2001) is essentially the same as the one used by J.S. Bach in his caffeinated Cantata of 1732, except that instead of the father pleading with his daughter to stop drinking coffee, it is now the daughter who pleads with her father to quit drinking - cappuccino. And it is in English.

There are some similarities with the Bach work, such as the use of the narrator and alternating arias and recitatives to tell the story. Otherwise, Cappuccino Concertino is a newly composed work in neo-baroque style. Instrumental sections have been given greater prominence, lending the work more of a "concertino" feeling.  The piece is not difficult to rehearse and the vocal parts fit nicely within the ranges. The full version was premiered in October 2001 at the Church of the Lighted Window, La Canada, California, and featured the talents of Renée Sousa, soprano, and the late René Aravena, baritone.

Cappuccino Concertino
also comes in a version for vocal trio plus piano or harpsichord, available in a piano/vocal score.
